After only 20 short, but beautiful years another angel was taken from this earth to watch over us. Though the reasoning is still & will most likely forever be unclear, Alisha Schoonmaker and her soul mate Kyle Dobert were visiting Kyles family in Schaghticoke on Friday July 22, 2011. At 6:44 pm that night the lives of 100's who knew the two would be changed forever when Kyles father Philip Dobert drove down Route 40 in the town of Schaghticoke in a 96 pontiac firebird at excessive speeds and under the influence. Philip lost control of the firebird and struck a utility pole. Alsiha was ejected from the the back seat of the vehcile & Kyle was pinned in the front passanger seat. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Philip Dobert was airlifted to Albany med with some non life threating injuries and was released to the Rensselaer County jail where he remaied without bail. He was being charged with two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and two felony DWI counts, as well as numerous traffic violations. One of the aggravated vehicular homicide counts stemmed from the multiple deaths, while the other was lodged because Dobert has been convicted of DWI in the past decade.
On August 31st, 2011 Philip was realsed from Rensselaer County jail without bail after his court appointed lawyer Gregory Cholakis, argued that Dobert lived in the town with his family for 18 years and posed no flight risk. After killing two innocent people, one being his own son the judge of Rensselaer County found it fit to let this man, who has been in trouble for driving drunk before, to roam the earth free until his trial. Neither Alisha or Kyle will be able to do this ever again. They wont be able to start their lives. Both had such a great future ahead of them which they planned on spending together... Which in a way they are but not the way anyone expected. The 3 years of their relationship will keep all family & friends filled with fond memories of happiness, fun and their hearts filled with the love they shared. Though nothing will ever fully heal the hole in so many hearts that was caused by a drunk driver.
